Changing All Our Rigging A Week Before We Cross the Pacific!! - (Episode 221)

  • We have an extended episode this week as Jonas Berg, one of the owners of Selden Masts flies down to Mexico to help us re-rig our lagoon 450 catamaran. The knowledge that this man shares is invaluable, and there is so much to learn from him, hence the longer video this week.
SV Parlay is a hurricane damaged Lagoon 450 catamaran, which Colin rebuilt with friends and has started sailing around the world. We found bulkhead damage on their catamaran in Panama, so have fixed her up, and are almost ready to cross the Pacific Ocean!!

This guy is an absolute LEGEND!!!!!! In the automotive World, we deal with many parts that have loc-tite "RED" , that has to come out. The easy trick is to heat the nut, bolt, screw with a propane torch and unscrew it. The Loc-tite will turn to liquid again and the screw or bolt will come right out.. The factories love to use it on universal joint collar bolts.. Without heat, you can fight the bolts all the way out and even destroy them. Heat it up for a minute and it's like it's greased...... THIS was a great video!!!!

If you don’t plan on using it very often, you can pick one up at Harbor Freight for about 10 bucks. It’s definitely worth it for the piece of mind. Especially, since corrosion from the ocean causes a lot of screws to become seized and need a little extra help getting unstuck.

The fact that it was also longer than normal was an added Bonus for sure!!! I think if you put together a one time "Pay-Per-View video, that didn't omit valuable, amazing stuff, that at least got us to the day you finally embark would be awesome. I know I for one would pay for that as I'm sure others would too. I would make it "Free" to fateful Patreons and $5 for everyone else, think of it like this you could then cut it up and use it as your weekly update for a month or more for those that don't pay to watch it and just follow it up with a video for those of us that paid to jump forward. I imagine it could pay for a few bar tabs 😂😂😂

Next time you have problems breaking a fastener loose that you think may have been installed using Loctite, you could try applying some heat with a propane torch. The heat will breakdown the Loctite (even the red stuff) and make it easier to turn.

I was on a 30 ft sailboat in the San Francisco Bay when all the rigging snapped and the mast fell over. The main sail and the job fell in the water and filled with water, pulling the bow into the water. The coastguard had to tow us to Treasure Island. It took hours to get there. It was terrifying!! The captain had just bought the boat, but didn't do a check of the rigging.

    1) wintergreen oil will cut corrosion extremely well, we used it in the avation work in the military, 2) the lock tight is the reason there is no corrosion, it prevented the dissimilar metal corrosion between the Stainless steel and the aluminum. How ever I have one of the impact drivers like that i inherited and had never seen one in action. I learned somthing today. Outstanding.

The expert flown in is excellent - he knows what he's talking about. The carrying ropes of an elevator were installed in a similar way. The fact that he lazily does not shorten the steel cable with the cutting disc of an angle grinder shows real expertise. Stainless steel (chromium steel etc.) dissipates heat incredibly poorly, so it very quickly overheats (anneals) the steel and can destroy its mechanical properties. Don't forget Team Colin, red Loctite can only be removed again by heating the material to around 300 degrees! My advice, never dry screw together rust-free connections and briefly heat them up before opening. Weak Loctite or grease is a must - or the screw connection can jam and then only destruction helps! This happens because the heat generated during turning cannot dissipate well into the surrounding material. Then the whole thing is welded together to form an inseparable connection. BTW, purple Loctite is for aluminum and brass.

I feel like I just took a master class on rigging! What a great learning experience. Absolutely the best way to teach. Explain, Show, Do. Great teaching methodology. Cheer to Jonas and Seldan.

I am honestly concerned about Master Jonas health watching him shake. He seems like a extremely genuine and kind person.

Collin, Love the channel have been watching from the start. A couple of tips for the future. S.S. and alum. as you said corrode very easily. I work in the salty snack food industry and the whole plant is S.S. & Alum. Typically we use Loctite Green 638 High Strength Retaining Compound. Helps keep the SS bolts from corroding to the Alum. Also when u cannot break the bolt loose a little heat from a torch will melt the Loctite and create a lubricate to loosen bolt. 1 more thing when drilling out a SS bolt use a cobalt drill bit a drop of lubricant and a moderate drill speed. Do not run the drill fast you will burn up the bit. A little practice and you can drill them out pretty quick using this method.

Only vessel I've been on... Disney Cruz for 3 nights... aside from my pops boat I mean like a metal canoe many times as a kid.
The gentleman who taught this rigging episode... I 100% understood

This episode was amazing. I watched Delos replace there rigging years ago in Thailand. I don't think they, well, I know they didn't show this level of detail which is amazing ! This will go in my Rigging Playlist.

Not one person speaking a word while watching his skills at the end. I love when a master shares his knowledge like this. Great vid. Thanks
